July 17 - Lisbon, Portugal

Well it only took me 3 tries to actually get to Lisbon, Portugal. I have tried twice before on Transatlantics, but the weather was never conducive to stop there. We took a Hippo Trip excursion, which was an amphibious vehicle that toured us around the city and then we viewed the city from the Tagus River.

The City looked lovely, clean and bright

We saw Jeronimos Monastery where we had scrumptious custard cream pastries crafted from a secret recipe from the Jeronimos monks.  Yummy, yummy!

City view from the River

The National Pantheon

Churches

Basilica da Estrela

Government Buildings

Monuments - the last one is the "Naked Truth"

Castelo de Sao Jorge

Pastel colored houses

Colorful steps and artwork around the City

Nice Mosaics

Torre de Belem, which is a prison that when at high tide the water would enter the prison cells

Ponte de Abril Suspension Bridge

Coming into port, you can see Christ the Redeemer off to the Right

From the adjacent hill

From the River Tagus. You can see Optis racing.

And heading out to sea

Their own, Christ the Redeemer. Two meter shorter than the one in Brazil

The Monument to the Discoveries, which is a stylized caravel seeming to be setting out to sea, with Henry the Navigator in its prow. On the 2 lateral ramps ascending to the symbolic figure of the Prince are some of the significant characters of the Portuguese overseas expansion and cultural names from the age of the Discoveries. Thirty two in total, all portrayed with symbols that allude to their identity: navigators, cartographers, warriors, colonizers, missionaries, and artists.
