June 8 - Goree Island, Dakar, Senegal
Our last port in West Africa is Dakar, Senegal. I am heading out onto an excursion to Goree Island.
We headed out from the port and went to the first roundabout, where we went 340 degrees and headed into the 'other' side of the port. Really, we could have walked
Here are a couple of pics from the short ride.
Then it was a 25 minute ferry ride over to the island.
This Island is known as the 'Door of no Return'. It was where the slaves were housed before they headed out to new countries .
This is the 'door' as seen from the water. And the last view, they would see, of the crystal clear waters.
We saw the post office,
and went to the local museum,
which was once a fort.
We visit the decaying home of the Governor. Only one Governor in the history of Dakar ever made his residence on the Island.
We saw a sand art gallery
and a church.
The narrow pathways were quite pretty, and there were no cars or golf carts on the island.
It reminded me of the French Quarter in New Orleans
Then it was beer and fun time.
Good-bye Goree and West Africa
And as always a Folkloric. Don't ask me what they are doing. I left before it was over.
