May 5 - Elephanta Island, Mumbai, India

Today I went on an excursion to Elephanta Island to see the Elephanta Caves. It has nothing to do with Elephants

First it was a Boat Ride

Then a small Train Ride

Then 120 steps up to the caves, and finally the caves. The Elephanta Caves are a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. They consist of 5 Hindu caves, a few Buddhist stupa mounds, that date back to the 2nd century BC, and two Buddhist caves. They contain rock-cut stones sculptures that show syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas.

Did I mention there were Monkeys, Yuck!

And of course a refreshing beer, with friends, before the boat ride back.

And don't forget the ever present sacred Cow
