May 24 - Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa

We arrived in South Africa to a little bit of weather. That did not stop us in going on our Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) Highlights excursion.

The most unique part of the excursion was the Horse Memorial commemorating the loss of 45,000 horses during the second Boer war

As we left the port,  we saw the Campanile Monument, built in 1923 to commemorate the landing of the first British settlers.

Then it was on to Summerstrand, where we drove through the Nelson Mandela University, the largest international university in the Southern Cape.

Then we went along the beachfront, of Mandela Bay, and stopped by Shark Rock Pier.

We then headed downtown and saw the old Herald Newspaper office from 1845

the old City Hall

the old Post Office

and the Mandela Library

It was then off to Fort Frederick, which was built to defend the city from the French, who never showed up.

And finally the Donkin Memorial (a pyramid), erected in the memory of Sir Rufane Donkin's wife, Elizabeth, whom the city as originally named after. There is also a 19th century lighthouse there.

The site has a tribute to...... of course Nelson Mandela

And this fighter jet sculpture looks out of place at this memorial

Here are a couple of Churches in the area

and Cool Structures

And of course - Residences - notice the electrified barbed wire

And last but not least the Mandela Stadium
