January 2 - Egg Drop Contest

Today we we’re still at sea on our way to Montevideo, Uruguay, for some wine tasting.

There was an Egg Drop Contest. I usually compete; however, we were only given 2 days to come up with a design and flight test it and I wasn’t in the right mind set. I’ll blame it on the drink package and being too close to New Year’s Eve.

In case you’ve never attended or competed, it goes like this….

1. You have to build a contraption that cradles and egg.

2. You cannot encase the egg; as it has to be easily accessible and retrievable.

3. You then have to drop it from the 9th floor of the Centrum, where it lands on the 4th floor. Yes, a 5-story drop.

4. The egg should land within a bullseye outline on the floor and not break.

5. Points are given for flare, construction and the egg remaining intact.

I did have a bird’s eye seat, at the bar, for the competition. In fact, one almost landed on me, but I jumped out of the way. Sheenagh, the activities manager, scolded me for not attempting to save me beer. No worries, no alcohol was spilled, Whew! I became braver and near the end a parachute of one of the contestants did hit my knee. Luckily the egg did not break.

There were 35 contestants, here are a few; Egg Wing, Humpty Air Rescue, and Fleggs Galore

The Drop

Checking the eggs, whether they are cracked or not.

The Carnage, including the pile of competitor's attempts

The Winner - Fleggs Galore - notice the flags that popped out after a successful landing. I wonder if he worked on the Apollo Missions.

Just so you know, I’ll be ready for the next competition! I had totally forgotten I had all the right material to compete. Art and Pam, you’ll be proud of my design. I’ll be keeping an eye out, and will be ready for the next time we have the Egg Drop Contest!!
