August 3 - Helsinki, Finland
We crossed the Sea and are now visiting the Nordic Countries. Helsinki, Finland to be exact. The weather was questionable, but ended up being a beautiful day.
Helsinki's symbol of Rebirth is the sculpture of Havis Amanda. It is a bronze Mermaid statue standing on seaweed as she rises from the water, with four fish spouting water at her feet surrounded by four sea lions. Today it is recognized as on of the most important and beloved pieces or art in Helsinki. This is the only picture I could get as it was being refurbished. And here is a better picture
There wasn't a great deal to see, so we kind of hung around the harbor and Senate Square and here are the sights.
Tsarina's Stone
Uspenski Eastern Orthodox Church
Supreme Court of Finland
Helsinki Cathedral
Alexander II Monument
Government Building (University)
What little of the Town we did see
Got to love the directions in the bathrooms
Back at the Ship where there was a creepy Santa Claus
Tourist Sign
What little of the Town we did see
We walked around Esplanadi Park and saw the statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg; author, poet and priest
And then made our way back to the square for a cold beer at a café in the Square
Back at the Ship where there was a creepy Santa Claus
