July 14 - Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca, Morocco is a new port for me. In fact I've never been to Morocco, at all. I'm sure you all remember Casablanca from the movie of the same title with Humphry Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. More about that later.

Pam had booked a private "Foodie" walking tour and invited me to go along. We went to the Ancient Town of Medina. It is the oldest (walled) town in the area. The streets were narrow and there were lots of people, shops and even scooters everywhere. I'm glad it was just the two of us and our guide, Mohamad, or surely I would have gotten lost.

This tour was all about food. We stopped by fruit stands, spice & herb stands, vegetable stands and Pam tried all the goodies. I, on the other hand, decided not to trust my tummy and politely declined the tastes.

And yes, there was fish and meats (beef, lamb and horse, no pork) to be had and even fresh eggs and chickens.

Mohamad showed us how the food was prepared using Tangies

and community ovens. The coals are above and the oven is below.

There were a great deal of street food. Neither of us tried any.

There were kitty cats all over the place. Because you are not allowed to have cats as pets. And the only dogs you can have are for home security and hunting

It was then time for 'safe' food at a local café. Everything was absolutely delicious!!

OK, back to Rick's Café, which from the movie (Casablanca), made up place, however an entrepreneur has open a Rick's café. This is as close as I got to it, and I had to zoom in.

However my friends went there and here are their pictures

Other sights around town

There were lots of 'men' only cafes

The front doors were exquisite

They had unique instruments - which I didn't ask about

And an abundance of tangies for sale

The local Mosque

We found out the name Casablanca comes form "White House" passed down from many languages (Greek, French, Arabic and Spanish). This is the 'White House' that was referenced

Cool Structures

And a gift from Mohamad. Their local pastries/pancakes
