June 23 - Zadar, Croatia

Another day another country. Today we are in Zadar, Croatia. This time I decided on an excursion via Tuk Tuk.

Our first stop was the Zadar Sphinx.
A famous Zadar resident Giovanni Smirić, devastated by the pain of the early loss of his wife Attilia, had a concrete sphinx erected in her honor in 1901. The replica of an Egyptian sphinx had his wife's face and the relief of an eagle on its chest (which has been chipped off). And instead of paws, it had fingers with which it once held a large sword to protect the shell with a small pond. Stories about the sphinx and the treasure buried under it captured the imagination of generations of the residents. According to legend, it also grants wishes to romantic people.

Giovanni and Attilia's Villa.

Then we headed to the 'Greeting of the Sun'. It is a large circular solar panel representing the Sun and with other smaller circular panels, which represent the planets. These panels are placed in scaled to the Sun. They are also a light show at night

And in the same plaza was the Sea Organ. It is a series of steps, that when a wave hits them there are individual pipes and they sound like lovely organ music. The last picture is a schematic showing you how it works. Along the plaza they have made the sitting area look like piano keys.

The Adriatic is gorgeous

Then we were off to old town, which is still surrounded partially by a wall.
