June 14 - Gibraltar, United Kingdom
Here we are at Gibraltar, United Kingdom. I was here in 2015, on my first transatlantic cruise. Back then I saw 'The Rock' inside and out. However, it was a hazy/foggy day and I could not see Africa. I always thought it was sooo cool to be able to stand on one continent and to be able to see another one. Today I accomplished that, at the southern most point - Europa Point. Yup, that's Africa
At Europa point you can also see;
A Mosque
A Catholic Church
A Lighthouse
And monuments to the battles fought over 'The Rock'
The highest peak of 'The Rock' on the North side
Southern Peak - but not the highest
The wall surrounding the city still stands and you can see where the wall was heighted from the original Moors' wall
South and North Gates
Downtown - outside the wall
Residences outside the wall
and inside the wall
Cool Structures. The ones on the right, are under construction on reclaimed land
If you didn't know it; The border of Gibraltar and Spain is a runway. Or more precisely a fence. The cacti are on the Gibraltar side and the palm trees are on Spain side
The last time I was here, if an airplane was landing or taking off they would shut down the border and the cars on both sides would back up, and in some cases for miles.
Well now they have built a tunnel, under the runway and traffic flows constantly.
However pedestrians and bicyclist are still allowed to cross the runway when there are no planes. From Spain looking to Gibraltar and vice versa
Cute beach town
We finished our excursion with wine and tapas at the King's Bastion - how unique is that!
