December 17 - Willemstad, Curacao

Got a taste of a Lionfish. No, they are not venomous if eaten. However, in the waters around the reefs if you are stung by one of their spines it is worse than a jellyfish sting and very painful. The lionfish ceviche was delicious, better than any of the other fish ceviche I’ve had.

Lionfish are invasive to the reefs here in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Mediterranean. They are highly predatorial and eat most of the other reef fish. This shop buys the fish from local divers and they pay a bounty per pound.

Besides making meals out of the Lionfish they also make jewelry. Do my new earrings look like the breast fins of the Lionfish pictured above?

Heading to and from the Ship you walk through the Rif Fort. It is now just a shopping mall.

  1. Good to know about the lionfish. I think there's a place at Port Canaveral where you can get it to eat. Learning lots from your travels! :-)
